My BMW Sucks

My BMW Sucks

I really hate to write this, especially after I’ve accomplished one of my goals, to own a BMW, but I am so disappointed in it, it is time to bitch about it.

I really am not a vain person. Not into status symbols just for the sake of looking like something I’m not. I don’t know fashion and I don’t go to all the hip clubs. But I do appreciate quality and when I am blessed to be able to buy nice things for myself, then I feel I should have them. My Beemer has been one of those things.

I was frugral and bought it used just about two years ago. It’s a 2005 325I. Although I’ve discovered how ridiculously different people react or treat you when you drive up in even the most basic BMW, I wanted it simply because I thought the Germans made a superior vehicle; more value for the buck.

Plus, I’ve had  a fascination with all things German for quite some time; German was my college major for a couple years, back when I thought of being a UN interepreter. I have or had family living in Germany and I have backpacked through the cities there. I thought I would live there one day. I heard angels sing when I stood in the Olympic Village and gazed upon the 4 cylindrical pillars of BMW Headquarters in Munich.

However, in the short time we’ve been together I’ve had numerous complications with my little car and am now terribly disenchanted with what I always thought was stellar “German engineering.”

Here are just the major items I can remember, in no particular order.

A/C goes out. In Georgia. In Summer! Thank God it happened while still under the initial warranty. This was just the beginning.

Sunroof breaks for no obvious reason – with no warning, I open it one day and hear a horriblly loud pop. Dealer says because it’s all one piece built inside the roof, it cannot be fixed without a MINIMUM $1800 repair.

Bad fuel pump – Drive to work one day at 9am. Attempt to leave for lunch. Car almost cranks then dies. A few helpful friends and a AAA tow truck later, I am about $800 poorer because it had a bad fuel pump.

Passenger window has issues – one day out of the blue, front passenger window gets stuck in the down position (of course). Goes back up slowly, sometimes not at all. Have to pull it up by hand.

Battery dies – costs about $180 to replace because it’s in a  funny place and requires some special kind of charging or prep work. Why does a 3-4 year old factory battery die?

Oil leak after oil change. OK, this one may not be the car’s fault, seems to have been a slack oil changer that didn’t replace the oil ring but since I’m not so sure…

Driver side window has issues – about 6 months after passenger window; driver’s side joins in the fun. You can hear/feel a click of some kind, hoping it’s just off-track but been afraid to have it checked.

Yesterday, “central locking system” button doesn’t work. Neither does the hazard button next to it. I checked all 3 fuses and they’re fine. WTF?!

These things can be expected in an older vehicle, but come on, this car is barely 5 years old!! And only 3 when I got it!! And it’s German!!! I now have new appreciation for every Ford product I ever owned or leased. I miss you Escort, Probe, Mercury Cougar, Mountaineer and yes, I even miss you Taurus.

Yes, I know the warning that cars like Mercedes and BMW can cost a lot to maintain, but we’re not talking regular maintenance here. I was rearended on 285 a few weeks ago and the guy at the shop asked me how I liked the car. I subsconsciously hesitated in my response and he called me on it. He then told me his boss had the same car and had multiple complaints; including the sunroof and electronic glitches that required him to enter from the passenger side. I’ve heard a few other tales as well.

So, I am somewhat comforted to know that I am not alone with my BMW troubles and disappointment. And let me say before anything else happens that I am ever so thankful the engine has been good and the ride smooth (this is me knocking on wood).

I am hoping this lock issue is NOT a wiring problem. My butt is already puckering at the thought. Buy America, Japanese, Sedish, hell buy Chinese but DO NOT buy BMW!!!

Coming Soon: MyBMWSucks will have its own page! In the mean time, please share your BMW problems so we can see we’re not alone.

BMW takes a step above Mercedes and come out with a 330i and a 320d Corporate Edition

BMW 3series 330i

BMW India will launch the 3-Series with a new engine in March. The 330i will replace the 325i as the 3-Series flagship in the country and will come with the same 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine found in the 530i. With 235bhp of power on tap the 330i reaches a ton in just 6.8 seconds and nudges its electronically limited top speed of 250kmph in no time. Just like any Bimmer, the 330i boasts of a long list of standard equipment including automatic stability control and hill-start assist to put all that power down.

The 330i is expected to cost Rs. 39 lakhs (couple of lakhs dearer than the 325i) and will compete with the Mercedes C230 V6 and Audi A4 3.2 V6 head-on. We really don’t care who wins as long as manufacturers bring their complete portfolio to our country and spoil us for choice.

Corporate Edition

Its the normal BMW 320d but with few unessential parts strip down. Hence saving about 8lakhs and so costing just about 22.95lakhs Ex-showroom Mumbai.

Strip Down Features:

1. Halogen bulbs instead of Bi-Xenon headlights.

2.No Sunroof

3.No I Drive

4.No Rear center handrest.

5.No bluetooth connection.(optional)

6.Six-CD changer(optional)

The BMW X5 has got a mid-life facelift internationally and we can expect the new version to hit our shores soon. The changes are very minimal and include larger air ducts, altered headlights and tail lights, new rear bumper, new interior trim, latest iDrive system and park assistance system. Along with these changes, the new X5 also gets the latest engines and an 8 speed automatic gearbox. Prices are expected to go north marginally.

Valentine's Day History!

Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines”. Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[1] The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.[2] It’s considered one of the Hallmark holidays.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women.[3]
Saint Valentine

Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine.[4] The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae).[5] Valentine of Rome[6] was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome.[7] and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Valentine of Terni[8] became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino).[9]

The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him.[10]

No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time a Saint Valentine became linked to romance in the fourteenth century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were utterly lost.[11]

In the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, the feastday of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar and relegated to particular (local or even national) calendars for the following reason: “Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14.”[12] The feast day is still celebrated in Balzan (Malta) where relics of the saint are claimed to be found, and also throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics who follow the older, pre-Vatican II calendar.

The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were excerpted by Bede and briefly expounded in Legenda Aurea.[13] According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.

Legenda Aurea still providing no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend provided by American Greetings, Inc. to History.com and widely repeated, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved,[14] as the jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended and healed,[15] or both. It was a note that read “From your Valentine.”[14]
